Making the right Choice in Partitions
ASI JD MacDonald supply and install a broad range of toilet partitions. Their patented systems provide a unique, strong and innovative design which will outlast and out-perform many other toilet cubicle and shower partitioning systems. ASI JD MacDonald can advise on the most cost effective and practical design and provide clients with a distinctive solution to suit their specific project.
Making the right Choice in partitions means firstly establishing the amenity use. When choosing or deciding on a toilet partition system the facility usage and location must be taken into consideration. Once it is understood of the building type, then the toilet partition , joinery and wall cladding material selection can be matched to the client’s needs.
There are 4 common toilet partition mounting systems.
- Overhead braced that are floor or pedestal mounted
- Ceiling braced- floor or pedestal mounted
- Ceiling fixed to floor or pedestal mounted
- Floor mounted with NO overhead rail
Overhead braced floor mounted
This type of partition system has a continuous fixed bracing section above each door and frontal panel. This bracing provides stability for the partitions without the need for ceiling fixings and the standard overall height is 2m.
The frontal panels are fixed to the floor with a L-shape extrusion and each door has 3 hinges.
Overhead braced pedestal mounted
Similar to the overhead braced floor mounted partition, this type of partition system also has a continuous fixed bracing section above each door and frontal panel. The standard overall height is 2000mm and the bracing negates the need for ceiling fixings. The frontal panels are fixed to the floor with via pedestal leg mounts or spigots. Each pedestal leg is a 200mm high adjustable leg.
Overhead braced floor or pedestal mounted partitions are one of the most cost-effective options and are best suited to high usage areas.
Ceiling braced floor mounted
Celling braced and floor mounted partitions have a full height front panel with a continuous overhead top rail. All front panels are full height to the finished ceiling level. There are 3 hinges per door and an L bracket ensures ease of floor mounting.
Ceiling braced pedestal mounted
Full height front panels are mounted on 200mm high pedestal legs. The partitions are braced to the ceiling via a continuous channel.
Ceiling fixed- floor or pedestal mounted
Ceiling fixed partitions differ to ceiling braced partitions as the front panel is connected directly to a solid fixing above the ceiling line. This solid fixing must be supplied and installed by the builder prior to installation of the partition system. Frontal blades or panels are fixed to the ceiling via a 20 x 12 angle. This angle is discreet and is only visible from inside the toilet cubicle. Frontal bades can be mounted on pedestal legs or run continuously from the floor level to the underside of the ceiling.
Floor mounted with NO overhead rail
Floor mounted partitions with NO overhead rail can only be specified if the frontal blades can be fixed to a concrete slab substrate. This is to ensure the partition fixing has structural integrity. This type of partition is not recommended for high usage areas.
Overhead braced floor mounted
This type of partition system has a continuous fixed bracing section above each door and frontal panel. This bracing provides stability for the partitions without the need for ceiling fixings and the standard overall height is 2m.

Ashford Hospital Adelaide
Ashford Hospital is the largest private hospital in Adelaide, South Australia and is part of Adelaide Community Healthcare Alliance (ACHA).
The hospital planned a significant upgrade that would include patient facilities, hospital infrastructure in addition to new theatres, and recladding the exterior of the building for better fire performance and modern finish.
Ashford Hospital is 67 years old, and this is the first major upgrade in almost 40 years.
Schiavello Construction held the head contract, and SA Construct was contracted to replace the exterior cladding using ASKIN ViviD panel with non-combustible Volcore.
PROJECT DETAILS
Ashford Hospital
Builder: Schiavello Construction
Architect: SA Construct
Products : VivID, Core: Volcore,
Profile: Seamless
Colours: COLORBOND® Basalt
Services: Design and drafting, Specification, Logistics, Manufacturing, Recladding
Challenges and Solutions
As well as updating the exterior with a new look, the hospital required the old cladding to be replaced with a product that met today’s’ building codes, fire performance and insurance requirements.
As a result, ASKIN’s ViviD panel with Volcore was selected based on its non-combustibility, concealed fixing system and ASKIN’s ability to manufacture and deliver within budget and time frame.
SA Construct Project Manager, Brian Cvetinovic says he recommended ASKIN Panel for this project because of the unique concealed fix system, and because ‘they could deliver within a quick turnaround’.
Removal of the cladding took some time and detail and a lot of planning with each panel being removed piece by piece. Daily task tasks were set to ensure each panel removed, required replacement that same day.
It was important that Ashford Hospital continued to operate as usual while works were undertaken.
The ViviD panel was manufactured in 3-metre lengths and was installed horizontally and vertically with Seamless profile in COLORBOND® Basalt.
The Results
Ashford Hospital now has a modern and refreshed looking building. Staff and patients now have peace of mind that the building materials used meet the relevant building codes and provide a safe place to work and receive their medical treatments.
The benefit for Ashford Hospital is they now have a fire-rated panel while giving the hospital a new a look.

A Healing Environment
Conceived as an object in the landscape, AZ Sint-Maarten is a human scale hospital that radiates simplicity and serenity – a solid building surrounded by green space and enveloped by delicate brise soleil elements. The realisation of this concept required complex collaboration between the design team, project managers and contractors. Sophisticated technology, design anchored in sustainability, competitive budgeting and patient centered design features were woven together to create this unique environment.
A New Regional Hospital for Mechelen, Belgium
The AZ Sint-Maarten project combines 3 formerly separate hospital campuses, (Rooienberg Duffel, Leopoldstraat and Zwartzustersvest Mechelen) into one brand new building along the Mechelen ringway in Belgium. On Friday June 8th, 2018, Jan Ennekens (General Manager of AZ Sint-Maarten) cut the tape of AZ Sint Maarten by VK Architects & Engineers. This event took place more than a decade after the architectural firm won a 2007 architecture competition to design the regional hospital. This new hospital includes 654 inpatient beds (about 50% of which are single bedrooms), 96 outpatient beds and an ample consultation area. Approximately 1,700 people are employed by the hospital.
Design Concept: An Object in Landscape
The designers began with anchoring the project in the green space surrounding the site which inspired strategies for building orientation, materials, volumetrics and accessibility. The result was optimal integration into the landscape, with a compact design that ensures a human-scale. In addition, a waving brise soleil solar protection adds a playful, and also delicate element: a second skin, protecting patients and personnel.
A Clear Spatial Layout and Concept
Spatial arrangements and functional relationships are key in hospital design. In close cooperation with the team from AZ Sint-Maarten, functional floor plans, flow models and relational diagrams were refined into a design with a clear care vision: both outpatient and inpatient care, and chronic and acute patients are separated; hospitalisation departments are grouped per care floor and vertically connected to the medical technical services in the base.
In close consultation with the hospital, much attention was paid to patient comfort in the form of privacy considerations, ergonomics, and environment and safety features. By including a multitude of glass surfaces, patients have nearly continuous visual contact with the world outside. To achieve this, the architects specified windows and joinery complying with the highest performance and thermal insulation criteria as set out by Belgian standards. CS 77-HI windows from Reynaers Aluminium complied perfectly with this requirement, while also literally creating a window to nature and providing the building with plenty of natural light. In addition to providing each patient with a view towards the surrounding greenery, each patient has access to their own sanitary facilities and an internet-TV with various customizable functions.
Compact and delicate
In addition to creating a more human scale, the compact nature of the building design required less building envelope per square meter, which in turn reduced construction costs during the building phase, as well as energy loss savings over the longer term.
Further optimizing the lower energy needs of the building, a brise soleil was applied to a number of façades to form a sunscreen solution.
VK Architects & Engineers designed this unique brise soleil solution using curved lamellas in a wave pattern. The inclination and form was studied by VK Architects & Engineers to achieve a highly functional sun shield. The design process included the production of a building simulation model to monitor the thermal comfort in patient rooms. In addition to optimal performance, the design of the brise soleil lends a unique identity to the building, while still affording patients views from their bed to the surrounding landscape. The unique design was indicated in the tender file as intellectual property of VK Architects & Engineers.
Moving from design to production of the brise soleil, the contractor and Reynaers Aluminium came up with a technical proposition by tailoring the existing BS 100 system to the design needs. This solution consists of no less than 63,000 meters of profiles. This delicate and functional ‘skin’ adapts to the façade orientation. For example, the lower position of the sun in the west and east requires smaller distances between the brise soleil slats than the higher position of the sun in the south. Much attention was also paid to the transition from public to semi-public and private spaces by playing with degrees of brightness.
Collaboration between Architect and Manufacturer
As the construction of the hospital was submitted to public tendering, VK Architects & Engineers could not select any preferred manufacturer nor subcontractor beforehand. Following award of the contract, the contractor MBG and subcontractor Couwenberghs-Schellens proposed Reynaers Aluminium. After a tour of the Reynaers’ facilities, Reynaers Aluminium was brought on board the project team.
Starting from the detailed design of the brise soleil by VK Architects & Engineers, a close collaboration between manufacturer, contractor and architect was established in order to come to a workable technical solution. ‘One of the key elements in this project was the wind tunnel test to verify the overall resistance to wind loads and acoustical impact. This test convinced everybody of the quality of the technical solution provided by Reynaers,’ says architect Erik Vereecken, Project Director Healthcare at VK Architects & Engineers.
The design aims were achieved by respecting closely the detailed design and ability of manufacturer to modify their standard projects to a new, tailor made product.
Erik Vereecken, Project Director Healthcare at VK Architects & Engineers
A BIM Concept
AZ Sint-Maarten is unique as it was an early adopted of BIM (Building Information Modelling) from 2010. Working with a 3D model gave the opportunity to check different aspects of the design and walk through the project before it was built. Long before construction began, airflows, mechanical and thermal simulations were undertaken with simulation data evaluated further to optimise the design and keep budget competitive.
A Healing Environment
Solid yet delicate, compact and highly functional in design yet expansive in feeling, AZ Sint-Maarten is truly an exceptional example of a healing environment that nurtures and supports patients, families and those who work within the healthcare environment.
